Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Miguel Rojas Newman from Mexico has announced his commitment to continue his academic and athletic careers at Virginia Tech University beginning in the 2022-2023 school year.
“I am really excited to announce my verbal commitment, to continue my swimming and academic career at Virginia Tech. Thanks to my parents, coaches and friends for all the support throughout this years. Can’t wait to be a HOKIE!”
Rojas Newman is in his senior year at The Bolles School out of Jacksonville, Florida. At the beginning of November 2021, Rojas Newman helped The Bolles School to another FHSAA Class 1A State Championship. Individually, he earned first place finishes in the 50 freestyle (20.49) and 100 butterfly (48.26). He also swam the butterfly leg of the winning 200 medley relay in a time of 21.55. The relay swam a total time of 1:28.28. His 50 freestyle time earned him his first Summer Juniors Cut.
He also competed at Winter Juniors East at the beginning of December. There he made the ‘C’ final of the 100 butterfly swimming a time of 48.49 in prelims and a 48.38 in finals. He also swam a best time of 45.04 in the 100 freestyle.
His best short course yards times are:
- 50 freestyle: 20.49
- 100 freestyle: 45.04
- 100 butterfly: 48.26
Virginia Tech is a public university located in Blacksburg, Virginia. The school is a member of the ACC. The men finished third out of 12 teams at the 2021 ACC Championships. It took times of 19.87 in the 50 freestyle, 43.81 in the 100 freestyle, and 46.85 in the 100 butterfly to earn a spot in finals at the 2021 ACC Championships.
The Hokies sprint freestyle and sprint butterfly groups are internationally led. Egypt’s Youssef Ramadan leads the way in both as he holds the fastest time on the team this year in the 50 and 100 freestyles as well as the 100 butterfly. Carles Coll Marti from Spain is second on the team this year in the 50 freestyle, Luis Dominguez is second in the 100 freestyle, and Antani Ivanov from Bulgaria is second in the 100 butterfly.
The Virginia Tech butterfly group is one of the best in the country. In the 100 butterfly, Ramadan ranks at #2 in the NCAA this year and Ivanov’s converted time from SCM Worlds ranks him at #13. The Hokies also have another two swimmers inside the top 100 this season. Last year they had three inside the top 20, and give in the top 50. All of those from last year returned as well.
Rojas Newman will arrive on campus this fall in 2022. He arrives just in time as Ivanov is currently a senior (they may overlap if Ivanov takes his COVID-19 fifth year). Rojas Newman will overlap for at least two years with Ramadan (three if he takes his COVID-19 fifth year) and three years with Dominguez.
Rojas Newman will be a member of the class of 2026 along with Ethan Maloney, Carl Bloebaum, Fanni Gyurinovics, Tanish Mathew, Lee Naber, Will Hayon, Landon Gentry, Aiken Do, and Mitchell Stroud. Gyurinovics and Mathew are also international recruits as Gyurinovics is from Hungary and Mathew is from India.
