Day 3 Prelims Heat Sheets

Day 3 Prelims Event Lineup

  • Women’s 400 IM
  • Women’s 100 backstroke
  • Men’s 800 freestyle

After 5 events yesterday morning, there are only three events today with the women’s 400 IM and 100 backstroke as well as the men’s 800 freestyle.

Like the men’s 400 IM, the women’s event also only has 16 entries so half will move onto the final later tonight. Canadian teenager Summer McIntosh already won her first Olympic medal this week with a silver medal in the 400 free and is in search of her first gold in this event. McIntosh is the World Record holder and top seed by over seven seconds with a 4:24.38.

Katie Grimes of the US will make her debut this week as the #2 seed and an entry time of a 4:31.41. Fellow American and reigning silver medalist Emma Weyant will look for a chance to make the podium again in the event.

The women’s 100 backstroke looks to be a good race. Regan Smith of the US is the top seed after setting a new World Record with a 57.14 at US Trials. That broke Kaylee McKeown‘s (Australia) record of a 57.33 which McKeown enters this meet with as the #2 seed. McKeown earned the win over Smith in Tokyo with a 57.47, a time that stands as the Olympic Record.

American Katharine Berkoff broke into the 57-point range at US Trials with a 57.83. The final 57-point entry is Canada’s Kylie Masse who won silver in Tokyo and also is a former World Record holder in the event.

The men’s 800 free will conclude the morning. Australia’s Sam Short returns to the pool after a 4th place finish in the 400 free on night 1, missing the podium by 0.14 seconds. Short is the top seed here with a 7:37.76. The #2 seed is Bobby Finke of the US who enters with a 7:38.67. Finke will look to defend his title after winning gold in Tokyo in a 7:41.87.
