The 2024 Spanish Swimming Championships kicked off today with history being made right off the bat in the heats.

Racing in the prelims of the women’s 100m backstroke, Carmen Weiler Sastre lowered her own national record, stopping the clock at 59.65.

Kylie Masse of Canada captured the top seed in 59.19 while Weiler was next and Estella Tonrath rounded out the top 3 finishers in 1:01.02.

For Weiler, the 19-year-old opened in 29.22 and closed in 30.43 to shave .11 off her previous best-ever and Spanish standard of 59.76 put on the books at last year’s edition of these championships. That prior effort was comprised of splits of 29.14/30.62.

The World Aquatics Olympic Qualification Time for Paris sits at 59.99, therefore, Weiler cleared that threshold by .34 en route to punching her ticket. We’ll see what the teen can produce in tonight’s final.

Weiler competes for Virginia Tech in the United States’ NCAA.
