Day 7 Prelims Heat Sheet

DAY 7 PRELIMS EVENT LINEUP

Here we are: the final day of the 2024 European Championships in Belgrade. This morning’s prelims session will be the shortest of the meet, featuring only the men’s and women’s 400 freestyles, as well as the men’s and women’s 4×100 medley relays.

The women’s 400 free sees Czech Republic’s Barbora Seemanova come in as the top seed, entering with a 4:03.41. Hungarian Ajna Kesely is the #2 seed, coming in with a 4:06.35.

The men’s 400 free will feature Austrian Felix Auboeck, who is the top seed with a 3:44.14.

The women’s 400 free wasn’t terribly fast in prelims this morning, seeing Portugal’s Francisca Martins posted the top time of the heats with a 4:14.77. Martins was out in 2:04.85 on the opening 200m this morning, however, she didn’t quite hold that pace, and came home in 2:09.92 on the back half.

Ajna Kesely, the #2 seed coming in the the event, came in 2nd this morning with a 4:14.93. Kesely was out slower than Martins, 2:05.73 on the first 200m, but came home faster, splitting 2:09.20.

Barbora Seemanova, the top seed coming into the race by nearly 3 seconds, swam very relaxed this morning, taking 6th with a 4:16.55. Seemanova split 2:04.11 on the first 200m this morning, which was the fastest first 200m split in the field. She then shut it down and faded from the lead, but still managed to make it back to the final for tonight.

The men’s 400 free was a little faster than the women’s event this morning, seeing 3 men go under 3:50. It was Austrian Felix Auboeck who led the way, clocking a 3:48.86, which is just 4 seconds off his seed time. He put together a very solid swim, getting out to a 1:53.05 on the opening 200m, then came home in a 1:55.81 on the back half.

Israeli Bar Soloveychik clocked a 3:49.92 to come in 2nd this morning. He was out a touch slower than Auboeck on the front half, splitting 1:53.61, then came home in 1:56.31. Soloveychik still had it in him to come home in 28.00 on the final 50m of the race this morning, which indicates he had the ability to push it a little harder in the middle of the race.

Switzerland’s Antonio Djakovic clocked a 3:49.99 to touch as the 3rd swimmer under 3:50 this morning. He split the race very similar to Soloveychik, clocking a 1:53.53 on the first 200, and coming home in 1:56.46.

Looking forward towards tonight, Lithuania’s Danas Rapsys is another name to watch. Rapsys, a World Championships gold medalist in the SC 400 free, came in 6th this morning with a 3:51.57.

WOMEN’S 4×100 MEDLEY RELAY

  • World Record: 3:50.40 – USA (2019)
  • European Record: 3:53.38 Russian Federation (2017)
  • Championship Record: 3:54.01 – Great Britain (2021)

TOP 8 QUALIFIERS:

  1. Hungary – 4:04.30
  2. Poland – 4:04.44
  3. Greece – 4:06.21
  4. Denmark – 4:06.31
  5. Sweden – 4:06.52
  6. Israel – 4:06.63
  7. Slovenia – 4:09.22
  8. Slovakia – 4:10.29

Only 11 teams competed in the women’s medley relay this morning, however, Finland was disqualified, leaving Serbia and Armenia as alternates for tonight’s final. This morning, Hungary and Poland were separated by just 0.14 seconds.

On the Hungarian team, Lora Komoroczy split 1:01.41 on back, Eszter Bekesi clocked a 1:08.69 on breast, Panna Ugrai swam 58.89 on fly, and Minna Abraham anchored in 55.31. Hungary will be able to change some swimmers out tonight, where we can expect Nikolett Padar to anchor at the very least.

Meanwhile, Poland’s team saw Laura Bernat lead off in 1:02.99, then Dominika Sztandera split 1:07.91 on breast, Wiktoria Piotrowska went 58.70 on fly, and Zuzanna Famulok anchored in 54.84.

Other notable splits in the field included Israel’s Andrea Murez anchoring her relay in 54.51, which was the fastest free split in the field.
