Filter Cleaning

I am using a cartridge filter system and am looking for something to clean them with. I usually just spray them off a couple times a year right now. I have used big box store cleaning spray but notice they are caustic or maybe acidic. Which product out there works or is at least less harsh or is there a non-pool product that will do a good job? A long time ago I heard that Woolite would work but that sounds like a big sudsing issue to me.
